Jocelin Pan

A violist possessing “ravishing strength” (ConcertoNet), Jocelin Pan is versed in an eclectic array of repertoire. She engages the community as both a performer and teaching artist. As the co-Artistic Director of Ensemble Échappé, Jocelin has assembled a team of new music visionaries, committed to reshaping the contemporary concert experience.  Programming works from emerging to established composers of the 20th and 21st century, EÉ cultivates virtuosity in an eclectic spectrum of repertoire.

An acclaimed soloist, Jocelin gave the U.S. premiere of Andrew Ford’s Viola Concerto The Unquiet Grave with the New Juilliard Ensemble and “played the solo part with great sensitivity to texture” (The New York Times). She also led the Juilliard Chamber Orchestra in an un-conducted performance of Joan Tower’s viola concerto Purple Rhapsody.  2016-17 highlights include the premiere of Rome Prize winner Nina C. Young’s viola concerto EarPlay.

In the summers of 2013 and 2014, Jocelin was a New Fromm Player at the Tanglewood Music Center, a group of TMC alumni who have distinguished themselves in the performance of new music.  She spent her time in the Berkshires almost exclusively focusing on this literature, performing works by TMC composition fellows in addition to other works for the Festival of Contemporary Music. In April 2014, Jocelin joined other members of the New Fromm Players as the Ensemble in Residence for Bright Sheng’s program, The Intimacy of Creativity, at the University of Hong Kong.  She has performed at several music festivals including the Lucerne Festival Academy, Spoleto Festival USA, Tanglewood Music Center, Perlman Music Program Summer School, New York String Orchestra Seminar, ENCORE School for Strings, and International Academy of Music (Italy).

Jocelin looks forward to joining the MAP Viola Faculty in the fall of 2016.  As a founding member of the teaching ensemble Milestone Trio, Jocelin brings interactive concerts and classroom workshops to schools in Manhattan.  The ensemble’s curriculum emphasizes active listening and creative imagination through the exploration of diverse repertoire.  From Beethoven Serenades to “Let It Go,” the Milestone Trio aims to engage young audiences through storytelling and musical interpretation.  Previous faculty positions include The Nightingale-Bamford School and Harmony Program.

A recent graduate of The Juilliard School, Jocelin was awarded the William Schuman Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music.  Jocelin received a Bachelor of Music degree, studying with Ms. Heidi Castleman and Mr. Misha Amory, and a Master of Music, studying with Mr. Robert Vernon and Ms. Heidi Castleman.
